Student Life

City of East Lansing

With a population of about 50,000, East Lansing surrounds the northern side of MSU with its college-town charm. It offers a wide array of amenities—unique shops, restaurants, bookstores, cinemas, churches, coffee houses, malls, community events, annual art and music fairs and convenient mass transit. Students also appreciate its social opportunities and its relatively low cost of living. Family-oriented events also abound in a town described by one student as “open and friendly and caring.”

Campus and Community
East Lansing is a strong community of close-knit neighborhoods, excellent public schools, extensive neighborhood parks and exceptional leisure time recreational facilities. The city's public library is one of the finest in the state and is used regularly by students living off campus to study and to perform Internet research. Students also use the city's many recreation facilities including the outdoor family aquatic center during the summer, biking and hiking trails year-round and championship golf courses, soccer and softball fields. The East Lansing Hannah Community Center provides fitness facilities and a pool that many students use regularly; it can be reached via CATA bus service or a short walk from north campus. East Lansing's downtown is a bustling social and commercial center where students mingle with permanent residents to shop, dine and have fun. There are parks with fantastic river walks, a zoo and museums. Students living on and off campus are East Lansing residents and therefore eligible to vote in local elections. The City works hand-in-hand with the University to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students.

Explore the Region
The area features an abundance of parks, so it is easy to camp and spend time outdoors in one of the most beautiful parts of the nation. Our students enjoy the Great Lakes, swimming, fishing, golfing, boating, skiing, hiking, camping and sledding. Fall features pumpkin patches, corn mazes and the glorious color changes in the trees. Detroit is located within a 90-minute driving distance, while Chicago and Toronto are 4 to 5 hours away.

STUDENT PROFILE
“I had never been to Michigan before we moved here so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been impressed by the close knit community and how kind strangers are to each other. I've also been impressed with the large variety of activities available and especially the different festivals held throughout the year.”
